Craft Sale at First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Ah, some of the home baked stuff!
And Jill wants a picture of it also!
And Don Hustead will regal Carol Hobbs, Mary Jane Voelker, and Tracy Mosley with some wild tale!
Lois Duvall is an avid bronco fan!
Her son, Mark will keep her under control as her daughter Heather makes fun on the situation.
I can almost tell Theresa Cordova and Steve Parke are up to no good in this shot!
Patty Timm is manning my table because I have wandered off to the kitchen!

This is the view across the aisle from my table.
Matt and Tia hard at work holding down a couple chairs.
And here is Don spinning a wild tale for Patty Crehan in the kitchen.
Diane Hustead hard at work in the kitchen with Jeremy (forgot his last name.)
So, a good time was had by all and I wound up with this picture of Jill that I can not get to delete, or center or do anything I want it to, so I guess I will leave you to look at the back of her shirt.  Try to make the sale next year.  It is a hoot.

Got up early!

Yesterday I got up really early, so I decided to make a cake I had seen in the recipe section of the newspaper the day before.  I think it was called  "Black Magic Dark Chocolate."  Sounded too good to miss out on, so by 5:15 AM this is what the kitchen looked like.
And this was the sight in my sink!
While it was baking I had time to tidy up!  And when the timer went off I was in good shape.

Oh, doesn't that look good?
I do not like frosting, so I had a big piece without frosting.
It was superb!  Dark, moist, just the right amount of sugar.  But then comes the problem us single women run into...We can only hold so much cake!  I decided I would put some chocolate frosting on it.  That was a mistake!  I ate two more pieces, but help was on the way!
I had mentioned to the son-in-law that I might make it the day before.  I was surprised when my phone rang at 8:30 last night and his little voice said, "Grandma!  What did you do with that cake?"
Now in all fairness, I had thought about taking it into Jackie's shop and sharing it, but hadn't.  Then I had thought about running it over to her house, but that had not happened either.  I thought about calling and having them come and get it, but by that time me and that cake were getting to be pretty good friends!  So when Jimmie called, I told him my dilemma and he sent Shellie right over to save me from myself.
The only drawback to being a single woman seems to be what to do with the leftovers.  I love to cook and there seems to be no way to make cake for one, or a pot of vegetable soup for one,  and half a pot of coffee just seems to be a lonely undertaking.  So, now that Jimmie is renting the garage, I may have an outlet for my leftovers!
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!

Fall colors and the animals are staying close.

Isn't this beautiful?  It is a house up on the corner by Lagree's.  The homeowners really gave some thought to the planting of these trees; red, yellow, green, red, yellow, green.  There is no rhyme nor reason to what happens in my yard at any time of year.  Guess I am a sort of "early morning dig a hole and stick something in it and hope it lives" kind of girl.   I admire this yard.
So, since it is cold tonight, I decide to just watch a little television.  I remember when Kenny used to say he was going to watch a little television, I would tease him because he always fell asleep.  I told him it must be a damn little television because it was hid behind his eyelids.  Sure miss him.  Anyway, I sat down to watch television in my 2400 square foot house and see how everything manages to fit into 2 square feet, most of which is on my lap.
On the left is Elvira wedged between my hip and the chair arm of the recliner.  I like to call it "my recliner", but we know better than that, don't we?  Daisy has her head between my knees and looks at me with sad eyes trying to figure out how to dislodge Elvira and get onto my lap.  Icarus is down on the fuzzy rug acting like she does not care.  I have no idea where my other foot went!  It must be some where!
OK, you guys can have the recliner and I will just stand here and look busy.  So this is how I spend most evenings.  When I am up here on the computer, the Daisy dog is under the desk at my feet and the Elvira is in the dog bed under the buffet.  Icarus is usually on my lap, but tonight she is still down in the big recliner.  I am going to post this and as soon as that is done I will turn off the computer and they will all three run into my bedroom.  Icarus gets her treat on my dresser and the dogs grab thiers and Elvira goes under the bed and Daisy eats hers on the rug.  I hop in bed and it is off to dream land for all of us!  Yes, life is good!

I may not have the cleanest closet on the block, but I am working on that!

I have a friend who moved into a new apartment and he has worked very hard to get rid of "clutter" and that got me to thinking.  His idea of clutter and my idea of clutter are definitely 2 different things!  I have spent many years collecting "things" that I really need.  I have 2 bookcases full of cook books.  At one point in time, several years back,  I decided to sort them and only keep the ones I really needed.
So I made 3 piles: One for cookbooks I definitely wanted to keep.  One for maybe I wanted to keep.  One for "never look at these and why are they even here?"  I very carefully leafed through each book and placed it in one of the three piles.  When all the cookbooks were in respective piles, I put the "definitely wanted to keep ones" back on the shelf.  Then I took a closer look at pile number 2.  When all of them were in pile #1, I put them back on the shelf.  Pile #3 was now in pile #2 position.  And I sorted them and they were now in pile #1 which went back on the shelf.
I picked up the one remaining item and looked at it.  I could not think of a single soul that was worthy of having it and it looked so lonely there that I put it back on the shelf.  Now you may think this was an exercise in futility, but it wasn't.  I did exactly what I set out to do.  No, I did not throw anything out or give anything to the Goodwill, but I convinced myself that it was alright to keep all of them because they were my friends!  I love books and I worship cookbooks!
So now I have this friend pointing out the virtues of "purging" and I decided to try it again.  This time I decided on the closet.  Man, there is stuff hanging on those rods that I do not even remember ever seeing before.  This body has not seen a dress draped over it in 15 years and yet there are two dresses and 3 skirts hanging there waiting for the right moment.  Patient little things, I will say that for them.
Now, last year I purged all my shorts after the summer was over.  In all fairness I did that by sheer virtue of not knowing where I put them.  The only thing I can figure out is that they wound up in the Goodwill box quite by accident.  In all fairness, I decide this year that I am a little old for shorts so I have narrowed the summer selection down to the ones that end at mid-calf.  Those are called something like "capri, jamaca or something else."  I think those are going away this year.
So, into the closet I went with my little bag.  First to go was the brown dress with the necklace to match, still complete with price tags.  Then came a pretty little white gathered cotton skirt with a turquoise band embroidered around the bottom.  I really liked that, but into the pile it went.  Little old for that one.  Then there was a beige almost denim fitted skirt that actually fit me, but there again, it was a skirt.  Then some sort of African caftan, that God only know where that came from!  And a slinky black number with huge blue and red flowers.  What the hell was I thinking when I brought that home!  Also pulled out a long sleeved light blue shirt with a frilly bow-tie and a vest to match.  (I can not picture me in long sleeves, or frills, and sure as hell not a vest!)  There is even a Japanese kimono hanging in there; a gift from a friend.  I can not imagine what my friend thought I would do with that, but I can not toss out something a friend gave me, can I?
OK, so I am setting here at 6:00 in the morning looking over at that black bag and some how that white skirt is peeking out at me.  I know if I touch that bag, the skirt is coming out and going into the closet.  If it gets out, so will that beige skirt and then what?  OMG!  I think I am a hoarder!
So, here is what I will do...When my friend asks how I am coming in the closet, I am going to tell him "Really, really good.  I have a giant bag!"  As long as he does not ask what is in the bag, I am good to go.  That sounds like a very non committal answer to me.  Not a lie, exactly, and really not the complete and unadulterated truth and with a little luck and a cookie waved under his nose, he may not push it.   Damn!

Departing from my regular format.

I am departing from my regular way of giving you my opinion to bring you words I have copied from the NaturalNews.   I can see a boycott on the horizon!  I am going to highlight in yellow foods that I normally buy which I will NOT be buying anymore.  I mean are we asinine enough that we want to support the companies that are supporting the legislation to keep our food from being labeled with honesty?  Not me man!

Good Lord!  I may starve to death!  I did not realize just how many of these yoyo's there were till I colored them yellow.  Jackasses!

Dear NaturalNews readers,
The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) was recently caught red-handed running an illegal money laundery "slush fund" operation that violated Washington's fair election laws.

The purpose of the slush fund was to conceal the identities of food corporations that were funneling money to defeat I-522, the GMO labeling bill nearing a vote.

After being threatened with a restraining order by an Attorney General, the GMA finally decided to comply with the law and release the names of the food companies that conspired in this illegal money laundering scheme.

We've got the list of those companies right here:

Secret slush fund donors revealed

The companies that funneled money into the GMA's money laundering slush fund are:

Abbott Nutrition
Bimbo Bakeries USA
Bruce Foods Corp.
Bumble Bee Foods, LLC
Bunge North America, Inc.
Bush Brothers & Co.
Campbell Soup Co.
Cargill Inc.
Clement Pappas & Co. Inc.
The Clorox Co. (owner of Burt's Bees brand)
The Coca-Cola Co. (owner of Odwalla
)
ConAgra Foods
Dean Foods Co. (owner of Horizon milk)
Del Monte Foods Co.

Flowers Foods, Inc.
General Mills, Inc. (owned of Larabar)
The Hershey Co.
The Hillshire Brands Co.
Hormel Foods Corp.
The J.M. Smucker Co.
Kellogg Co. (owner of Pop-Tarts
)
Knouse Foods Cooperative, Inc.
Land O'Lakes, Inc.
McCormick & Co., Inc

Mondelez Global, LLC.
Moody Dunbar, Inc.
Nestle USA, Inc.
Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc.
PepsiCo, Inc. (owner of Naked Juice
)
Pinnacle Foods Group, LLC.
Rich Products Corp.
Shearer's Foods, Inc.
Sunny Delight Beverages Co.Welch Foods, Inc.
Share this list with others and encourage them to boycott all these brands, too. These are companies that actively participated in an illegal slush fund deception to try to buy the I-522 election by deceiving voters.

That the GMA would actively launch such a slush fund operation just proves that the conventional food industry in America has no ethics whatsoever and will actively pursue illegal activities in order to keep consumers ignorant and confused.

Took my friend Patty to Beulah a couple weeks ago....

I think my friend, Patty, has not been out and around much.  Rather think she might be a city girl deep inside.  Early in the spring I took her for a ride out to Avondale to meet Sister Nancy and she was fascinated with the gardens and and countryside in general.    I thought  if she liked the ride East she would really get a kick out of the ride to Beulah.
So I gathered her up and off we went to The Stompin' Grounds coffee shop ran by my friend Jan.  I usually have soap and lotions for sale up there along with my book.  I do like to rotate my stock and since I had not been up since the Spring, off we went.
While we were in there a herd of deer trotted across the street toward the coffee shop and went out back to have a little snack on the neighbors lilac bushes.  I snuck up on them, because that is what I do!
And when I was through wondering just how I would go about butchering one of these things, I decided to sing the song she had painted on the door to her garden shed!

Coffee cup drained and our goodbye's said, it was off to one of my favorite places when I go to the mountains...an old cemetery.  I have an insatiable appetite for tromping around in one of those places.  When I first came to Colorado, Charlie took me to a ghost town up around the old LaVeta Pass.  I want to go back there some day, but in the meantime, I make do with the ones at the lower altitudes.

I hope you are enjoying the little slide show, because I sure enjoyed making it.  And so Patty and I,   a couple frustrated but laid back hippie's bid you a fond farewell from beautiful Beulah, Colorado.  I am sure we will return here again and again.    I am sure of one thing and that is The Stompin' Grounds in Beulah is both a hippie haven and a damn good place to get coffee on a cold winter day!

Forgot to do the Monsanto thing!

Well, I did not forget to do it, but I did forget to do the blog!  Man I am so far behind that I may catch myself coming.  Did not do the one on Beulah either.  This slide show was taken on October 12 which is a week ago yesterday.  This was the nationwide march against Monsanto who is altering our food supply.  We want our food labeled so we know what it has been through, but Monsanto and our government has seen fit not to do that.  Consequently our cancer rate goes up, our food allergies go up, and cost of medical for this goes up.  Now I shall go into this further at a later date and I will give you statistics that will curl your hair, but for now I just want to tell you about this march and a very nice man I met there who is the counter part of my Favorite Republican in Kansas only this man is my Favorite Republican in Colorado!
So I showed up early and did a little shopping at the Natural Foods and then drifted outside to wait for someone I knew to show up and eventually they did, but in the meantime I met a little fellow in a red coat sporting a name tag that read, well, here it is.

Let me introduce you.  This is Jerry Denney, vice chairman of the Pueblo County Republican Party.  Now, you remember that my friend, Joe is my Favorite Republican holding office in Kansas, so now I have one a little closer to home.  Had a little trouble keeping his sign right side up, but once we got that mastered  we were good to go.  He drew my sign for me.  Unfortunately I do not have a picture of it.  I do have the sign.  When he drew the skull on the sign I almost jumped out of my skin.  He drew free handed and it was symmetrical!  I was right!  He was a draftsman!  They have a way of doing that.
We visited a little while and the subject of old motocycles came up and the Matchless of Sherman's was a subject he was excited about.  I promised to email him a picture of that when I got home and I did that.  I also sent him the video of the Matchless running that Dana had posted on youtube.  I just love it when I run into someone that I have something in common with even if he is a Republican!
And it just goes to show that we as people of the human race probably have a lot more in common then we think.  We did agree that if a worm is eating one end of the corn and dying, that we are not going to eat the other end of that ear.
Oh, then I found my friend Janet! And her Idle No More group.   And  Leslie.  And Paulette.  Cindy.  Sandy.  We all marched from Natural Foods on 29th to the highway waving our little signs.  Shades of Kent State, the Viet Nam War, Segregation and Gay Rights.  Seems like I have always been on the winning side!   Sure need to be on the winning side in this one.
So enjoy the little slide show.   I will post this as soon as Jerry says it is alright to use his name.  If he doesn't get back to me soonly I will just edit the little fellow out!  In the meantime, you should type GMO into a search engine and start reading.  We are one of a handful of countries that allows our food supply to be altered and we are paying for it big time!  It has to stop!  Just trust me!

I have been called some names in my time!

I was dashing off a quick email to a friend and signed my name, "Lucy Gooch."  I am sure that is not the name he expected to see and it is not one I expected to sign, but there you go.  My first husband always called me "Lucy."  I am sure it was a term of endearment and I think that he usually referred to me as Lucy except when he was mad.  When he was upset with me, it was "Nickel Bred Gutter Rat", but that is water under the bridge.
When we were kids growing up at home, I was Louella Beth.  Not Louella, but Louella Beth.  Josephine!  (Her middle name was Anne and we sometimes called her JoAnne.)  Delbert Leroy!  (And for some reason we called him "Jake".)  Donna Faye!  Mary Belle!  and Dorothy May!  Guess it was a southern thing, although I do not consider Kansas southern.  Course it is more southern than Nebraska.  And that is how we went through life with mother nipping at our heels.
The "Gooch" part came from the feed sacks and flour sacks that mother tediously unraveled the stitching on so she could have pretty fabric to sew something.  Ah, those were the good old days!  I fell heir to a pile of those recently and listed them on ebay.  Bear in mind that they were less then a yard of material and I sold one to a lady in Korea for $48.00 + shipping!  Most of them went to a lady in Georgia at $10.00 each.  I would love to come across some of those again.  Back on topic.
When I was newly divorced and working in Hutchinson, I wandered into the Red Carpet Restaurant and was hired as a cook.  The owner was named Bob and he decided I should be called "Lou" as opposed to Louella Beth.  So Lou Seeger was born.  I worked for that man 6 years before I finally opened my own restaurant which I named "Lou's Kitchen".  By that time the last name had changed from Seeger  to a couple different names.  Then came Colorado and a couple more name changes before I met my dear Kenny  Mercer.  Lou Mercer was born in 1983 and carries on to this day.   However, Kenny did not call me Lou unless he was testy with me and the only place Louella appears is on the marriage license.  As soon as we started dating I became "Luther", and Luther I remained until he passed in 2003.
And there you have it, my ramblings for today.  I miss Kenny.  I probably always will.  And Duane remains a fond memory.  If I ever meet a man and he calls me "Lucy" or "Luther", I may stick that third finger left hand in a gold band again, but I just ain't thinking that is going to happen.  Did have one that called me "Bella" for a while, but lost track of that little fellow.  And speaking of lost things, has anyone seen my glasses?

October 5 Ribbon Cutting at Plaza Verde Park...a bit late!

Thank you, Janet, for reminding me that I forgot to do this.  Must have been one of those days I met myself coming or going.
For the rest of you, this is what is happening on the east side of town.  I remember not to long back when this park was nothing but an eyesore and a very good place to get in trouble.  Not so anymore!  Thanks to a few souls who really care this park has been cleaned up, scrubbed down and painted murals by a great artists.  Why did this happen?  Because the people on the east side decided that this did not belong to the gangs and druggies and decided to clean it up and take pride of ownership in the place.
I found out about this grand opening from my friend, Janet Wallis Altmann who is most active in Chicano (and anything else that needs a hand) affairs.  She worked with Parks and Rec and Black Hills to get security lighting installed, painted the playground equipment, had the kiddies put their hand prints on it and it is now a place where families picnic.  Imagine that!
What the world needs now is more groups working together for a better world and more groups like Idle No More leading the way.  I only regret that I was in such a toot that day and did not get names so these people could be held up as role models to the world.  But I got Janet!  and I got a slide show!  and maybe the Nobel prize in literature!  Or maybe not!
But enjoy the slide show  anyway!

Want to know what I did yesterday?

First I got up and roasted 1/4 bushel of chile.  Then I peeled and canned 7 pints of tomatoes.  Then I went to church.  Then I came home and peeled the chile and canned them.  Then it was off to the Nature Center for the Peace Flotilla.  Then it was home and into bed.
This morning I tried to sleep in cause I thought it was Sunday!  There is just no winning with me!

OK, Debbie, here is the salmon from start to plate.

My daughter, Debbie, called me to tell me how disappointed she was that I did not post pictures of my experiment with the Salmon and Coconut oil, so I recreated it for her eyes only!

Here is my frozen piece of Salmon.

Here is my organic coconut oil from Viva Labs Inc.
Here is the skillet with coconut oil, dill leaves and lemon pepper.
And here is the finished product.  The tomatoes are from my garden.  They received a splash of extra virgin olive oil and some fresh basil, also from my garden.  There are also 3 Tostito Black Bean and Garlic corn chips.
Ah, the elixir of the Gods!  Wish you were here!

Now I am an official taste tester and review writer.

Oh, the things I luck into on this Internet amazes me.  I had an email from a fellow a couple weeks ago who said he had been watching my activities on Amazon and liked my reviews.  He then went on to explain his product and ask if I would be interested in writing a review of the product if he sent me a sample.  I thought that sounded like fun, so I told him "sure".  Free is always good!
So that is how I embarked on the current learning experience.  He is with Viva Labs and the product I am trying is organic extra virgin coconut oil.  I have used coconut oil in my soap and experimented with it in lotion and lip balm, but this time I am branching out to new areas.  I received my jar a couple days ago and when I opened it, I was met with the most heavenly smell of coconut.  I tasted a little tiny bit and my taste buds went wild.  I envisioned salmon with coconut flavor.  Never had that in my life and never would have dreamed of cooking with the stuff, but off I went in search of coconut oil as a cooking fat.
It seems it is good for a myriad of things including, but not limited to lowering my cholesterol, maintaining my weight, getting rid of my "belly", antioxidant, caring for my skin and hair, and cooking!  Ah!  That was what I wanted to hear!
So I got out my little skillet and my piece of Salmon.  Into the skillet went a tablespoon of coconut oil, little bit of dried dill, and a shot of lemon pepper, just to be on the safe side.  I turned that on a low heat and slapped a lid on it and in just a few minutes, I had my lunch.  The concoction made a kind of sauce which I poured over the fish.  Yummers!
This afternoon I am going to attempt a gluten free pie crust with coconut oil and rice flour.  I am thinking that the coconut oil is a substitute for butter and I should have a very flaky crust with just a hint of the coconut flavor.  The flavor is very subtle so that is good.  It is clear to me, that the coconut oil is going to be a keeper in my kitchen and organic is the only way to go.  Click on this link and check it out for yourself!

A book sale is easier said then done!

PFLAG funds several  scholarships at PCC.  For many years we did it by hosting a spring yard sale.  Recently we have decided that book sales are the way to go and much less work.  See, all year Ross would gather stuff for the sale and until last year it was all stored in the basement at his condo.  Then my garage opened up and that sucker was filled to overflowing.  When the idea of book sale came up it seemed perfect.  The books would be gathered and stored on site at PCC where the sale would be held.  That was right up until somebody donated 80,000 books from the library of an estate.

And then my garage came into play again.  A big van backed up to the door and when it left it was empty.  Not so my garage.

The first thing I did was start repacking because a lot of these were in plastic containers that they wanted back.  I tried sorting, but I really got confused!  I did manage to get a box for Louis Lamore (?) and other authors that I remembered people asking for at the last book sale.  Oh, and the Harlequins, and some where I have a box for kids books and another one for cook books.  See all the boxes on the shelves?  These picture were taken after I had been working for over 3 weeks on this.  I plan on finishing up in the next couple weeks and I hope nobody asks me where anything is located!  See how neat?
And way back there in the corner I can see empty shelves!  It is my goal today to make a path back to those shelves so they can not be empty any more.  Wish me luck!  Oh, first I have to gather up some more boxes.
Should have taken a picture of my chair, fan, and box of Kleenex where I spend a lot of time crying!  Oh, yeah, and the plate with egg roll remains on it, my bowl of melted ice cream, a few chicken bones, and my bottle of water and Jack Daniels!  As soon as all the plastics are empty, I can take a break.  I have rented part of the garage to my son-in-law for storage so this will curb my ability to say "Oh, yeah!  I have a great big garage.  Bring all your stuff out here and poke it in there."  I am bad about that!  But, then again, if no one used it then it would just set empty and empty is not good either.

So, for now it is off to church.  Next week I may give you a tour of my lower levels here in the house!  If you cringed at my garage, you will run screaming down the road at my basement, but Hey!  If I can live in it, you can look at it!
Have a good day and remember,
People who live in glass houses, should not throw stones!

Going to save this planet if it is the last thing I ever do!

This is my front porch every Tuesday morning.  Take a close look at this, because this is how much is NOT going into the landfill.  I see in Japan, they take this plastic and turn it into oil.  Here in the United States of America, where we are on the cutting edge, we throw it away.  So I am trying to do my little part to saving this planet.  My son tells me I am wasting my time and I had a male companion who told me  any idiot can do this.  I explained that I was looking at one idiot who couldn't, or wouldn't.  He has plenty of time on his hands now and could take up a hobby if he would like!  The son opted to save his recycles and deliver them to me a couple times a week.  I will keep him!

This is where I dump everything out and sort it.  Glass goes in the green bag.  The black bag poking out of the white bag, came from my step daughters shop .  Bag from the church is in there some where.  Friend on the southside helps fill the green bag with beer bottles.  The guy who picks this stuff up on Tuesday morning probably thinks I am a lush!  Oh, well, he may be paid to think!
Here my tiny little foot is mashing things so it will get more in the bag!
And this is my front porch Tuesday afternoon.  I sure feel better.
At any given time I can pop my trunk lid and you will see almost anything recyclable.  Been hauling a big bag of clothes around for several weeks awaiting a trip to the Los Pobres.  That should happen soonly.  The other day I got a phone call that Big R had grain for the geese priced at 50% off with a limit of 5.  As luck would have it, I had not unloaded the one bag I had picked up 3 days earlier.  So off I went to Big R, completely forgetting that I had to pick the son and girlfriend up for lunch.  Also I had not unloaded the recyle stuff I had picked up Sunday and Monday.  So I had to call him and tell him they would need to meet me because I had 300 pounds of grain, a black trash bag of clothes, a black trash bag of newspapers and the spare tire in the trunk.  In the back seat, I now had 4 white trash bags of recycle, 9 cloth bags for a trip to the grocery store, a carrying case of CD's, 4 packages to be mailed and a partridge in a pear tree!
So, to make a long story short, think about me next time you throw that plastic bottle in the trash, or that aluminum can, or that glass bottle, or the newspaper.  If we all put our minds to it and get in the habit of poking it in a bag and calling Lou, we may last a few more minutes on this little spinning green ball I like to call home!

Just getting up early to bitch!

Course I always get up early and have my alarm set for 5:30 AM in case I sleep late.  Since I get up early, I get my best work done before Mr. Sun pops over the horizon.  Several times a month I "redirect my emails."  By this I mean, the ones that have slipped by AOL's stringent spam eye.  That is a simple matter of clicking on the "this is spam" button which sends it to the spam folder which allows me to delete a whole page of trash with one little click on the delete button.  But occasionally I like to go in on each one and "unsubscribe".  That is a time consumer.
In the first place, most of them were never subscribed to in the first place.  Remember back when "junk mail" was the rage?  I used to keep a box by the door and toss it in there to be burned or shredded since I could not throw it in the trash because it had my name, address, telephone number, birthday and second child's information all over it.  I get very little junk mail nowdays, but the computer is full of it!
But sometimes I notice that the spam folder is becoming unmanageable so I start through and read them, sort of, but not very closely.  I can tell you, if I were to order all this stuff, I would need to be a very tall man, with a heaving bosom, a flat stomach, small penis, wrinkles, long eyelashes, full lips, flowing hair, shapely legs with varicose veins, in need of birth control, and suffering from erectile dysfunction!  This tells me that they have not researched me very well.  That being said, I start reading until I come to the "unsubscribe" button.
Now they want me to give them my email address that I want to unsubscribe from.  Excuse me!  This one.  And now, why do I want to unsubscribe?  Because I never subscribed in the first place.  Would I like to change my settings?  No, I don't think so.  What year did my father die?  Damn!  This is harder then I thought!
So when this is all done, I hear my mailbox click.  Oh, look!  A letter from them telling me how much they are going to miss me.  Won't I please reconsider?  This is much like the "do not call list"  that I update on a regular basis both on the land line and the cell phone.  Needless to say that does not mean you will not get phone calls from political parties, surveys, religious organizations, charities, off shore drilling rigs and the occasional scam to tell me that my darling grand daughter has been arrested, and I need to wire $15,000 to a bank in Tiawan to secure her release here in town.
But, on a lighter note, it is shaping up to be a great day!  Off to breakfast with the church people, then in to work with the step daughter, then home for what ever reason I always return here.  The moon on Thursday night was huge and beautiful before it was covered by the clouds.  Last night I could not even find it!  That troubles me cause I thought I knew where it was.
Have a good one and remember that every cloud has a silver lining!

Back to the Smokin' Sage!

Just a little note here to let you know I took my little friend by the hand last night and made a return to the Smokin'  Sage.  Selfish move on my part, but I have been craving barbeque like a house afire!  We were not disappointed.
We both had the pulled pork and it was out of this world.  I had a sauce with mine that appeared to be Jalapeno and Apricot.  They nailed it on that one!  I did not see what my friend had and it disappeared very quickly, leaving me with the impression that it must have been damn good what ever it was.
They are taking their little cart up to the Pikes Peak International Raceway next weekend.  If you get up there you better stop and tell them Lou Mercer said "Hey!"  Randy invited me, but unfortunately (?) that is the weekend I have company coming in from St. Louis so I am a homebody then.
You know what I like best about this barbeque?  Know how some of it is really greasy?  Not this stuff.  Grease is not my friend and I think I have figured out how he does it without soaking it in grease.  See he has this grill that has baskets in it and it goes around.  Be impossible for grease to hang on to that!  My friend agrees with me on the grease thing.
I forgot to ask him what kind of wood he uses.  I will ask him next time I see him and report back in to you.
He is located right on the south side of the convenience store on the corner of Baxter and Highway 50.  Years ago Baxter used to cross 50 and go into the airport, but that was many years ago.  Anyway, he has a sign by the road, so watch for it.  Then you drive right in and get ready for a taste bud delight!  Have I ever steered you wrong on food?  Hell no!  Eating is vital to keep my little (?) body going and I do not put anything in it that does not taste good.
Now, I am thinking that winter is going to be coming along and I need to visit with them about what happens in the winter.   Pretty sure a blizzard could shut them down.  Would me.  But until then get yourself on over there and enjoy a little bit of heaven before it gets too cold.
And tell them Lou sent you!

The storm clouds gather...

One of my favorite things in life is clouds.  I have albums full of them and now I have my Picasa albums full of digital pictures.

This is a fairly harmless shot of "maybe if we get together we can make rain" clouds.
This is a shot of drifty, buttermilk looking clouds at Garden of the Gods on one of the AIDS Walks.
.
This looks like it could really do something.
So anyway, you get the idea of the cloud fetish.  I want to go on record now as saying the clouds that are not clearly defined and hang over our heads like a foggy blanket are the ones we need to watch out for.  My state is being devastated by a silly thing called "rain".   For most of the summer we prayed for rain.  "Oh, Please God, just a little rain."  Our world was withering before our eyes.    Remember that?  Three feet of hail in Denver!
I took Stockyards Road home on Thursday and the conflux of the Arkansas and Fountain creek was visible.  Arkansas was clear and calm.  Course it flows through the reservoir, but the Fountain was a ugly, angry brown mess.  Bear in mind that it had travelled 35 miles down here from up North and it had lost some of it's furor along the way, but it was still enough to terrify this faint little heart of mine.
It made me think of the people who are in the "eye of the weather".  How frightening that must be to have the rain just keep coming and watch your street fill up and see your property line shrinking.  It was bad enough when the fires were burning up on the mountains, but now there is nothing to stop the water when it races down hill.  And the faster it races, the more debris it picks up.  And our "powers that be" just nod and say, "Oh, a hundred year flood.  That is what it is."  Kind of sad that the loss of property and life is written off with such a simple statement.  Course there is always FEMA.
Here are my thoughts on this phenomenon;
We are a mighty nation.  We shake our fist and nations tremble.  We open our checkbook and nations grovel.  We smile and nations simper.  But when the storm clouds gather, no one is in charge.  Mother Nature has the last word.  (In my simple mind, Mother Nature and God are one and the same, but I shall call the entity Mother Nature in this missive.)  Mother Nature can not be controlled by mere mortals.  She causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust.  And she keeps no time table.  She sends earthquakes to destroy temples and fires to consume the dead wood.  She washes her earth clean.  And we, being mere mortals that we are, fall to our knees and tremble.  We beg.  We grovel.  We try to explain it away, and  much like the fires in Yellowstone, we wait.  We wait and we know that soon the green shoot of grass will appear.  The tiny pine will peek from the forest floor.  The roots will go deep and cling to the bosom of Mother Earth.  In a few years we will have a forest again and God in his heaven will smile!
So for now, I will continue to collect my clouds knowing that some day I will be seeing the very bright sun!
You can not sprinkle showers of happiness on other people without getting a few drops on yourself!

If summer comes, can fall be far behind?

Ah, the garden has finally yielded nectar of the Gods, or in simple language, I finally got a tomato!  Let me show you my little garden of Eden here.  At first glance it may appear to be a patch of weeds.  That would be the untrained eye!
See, if you just look way down here you can see a squash.  I planted two full packets of squash so the geese would have lots.  One packet was yellow summer squash and the other was zucchini which is there favorite.  I have 26 squash plants and only 2 of them are zucchini.  Big thank you to Monsato for that one, I am sure.

Here is the beginning of a yellow squash.  It is about 2 inches long.

And here is a bunch of them getting ready to be made into goose food.  See, if I pick them when they are 5-6 inches long and slice and sauté them with a little garlic and maybe a green onion....oh they are so good.  But then the skin is no longer smooth they are almost impossible to chop let alone eat.  The geese do not know the difference.  Stupid geese!
Now if you look real close here you can spot a little watermelon.  It is about 3 inches across and is going to have to do some growing if it wants me to eat it, and better yet, if it does not want to get frozen and have wasted all the summer trying to grow for nothing!  Geese don't even like green watermelons!
Some where over there on the west side are some potato vines, but I have learned that I need to wait until the vines dry up or I will have no potatoes.  I do not know why the call them "vines" because they grow straight up like a tomato plant.  Well, come to think of it, they call those "vines" also.  Here is one of them and if you can see a tomato, more power to you.
But, while I was rooting around there, I did find a big red tomato.  Hell, I almost jumped out of my skin!  What you see here was lunch yesterday.  Sorry you missed it, but there was only enough for one, and what can I say?
Oh, look!  Here is the angel Lyn set in my garden to make it produce and keep it safe.  I am thinking this little chickadee is falling down on the job!  But then again, I did get that tomato.
Now,  look what is right over the fence!  This is my New Mexico Sunflower taking over the area between the Choke Cherry Bush and the actual garden area.  That is where I bury all my pets, so it is some very fertile ground.  This is the first time I have had blooms for a while, because if you remember, the Llama's were over there for several years and they liked to eat them and they had very long necks and really big teeth!

Remember this?
So there you have my garden.  I have been telling myself for 40 years that next year I will do better and nothing has changed;  I grow weeds and occasionally God will toss me out a little something to eat.  But, you know what?  It has worked pretty good so far, so why mess with something that works?  Like momma always said..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Another year down the tubes!

Counting today, there are only 5 days left in this year.    Momma nailed it when she said "When you are over the hill you pick up speed...
